Upon reassembly, if you pull the trigger on the lower half, you will see the safety lever come up. Push it flat down if you have to, per the Owner's Manual. Otherwise, the slide won't go past that point. The P365 is better than many of similar pocket sized pistols for general take down and reassembly.

As garyji indicated...that's how they work. You can slingshot with an empty mag if you first depress the slide release and slingshot. Otherwise, drop the mag and slingshot. Of course, with a loaded mag just slingshot, or use the release. Usually slingshot method is easier.
Slingshot method actually gives you some extra (spring) push into battery. If your trying to release the slide with the lever against an empty mag in the gun, yep, gonna be alot harder to overcome the mag spring pressure while trying to push the lever down. The only reason I can see to use force to insert a magazine is in the event the slide is closed so you're able to defeat the magazine spring as the top round makes contact with the slide. On a closed slide I just "push with speed" and apply pressure as necessary to seat the mag.
