So as a kind of teaser I have uploaded a couple of photo's of a mystery baritone sax for you to guess its maker and year of production. yamaha yss-61 soprano. This is my first time to post on the forum so here goes, I am thinking of selling my antigua winds 582LQ soprano sax and going for an upgrade to the yanagisawsa version but have come across a Yamaha YSS-61 soprano and wondered if anyone out there has played this vintage sax. I had a few SYOS Link inspired mouthpieces that I purchased at a good price, They were at best OK and not very inspirational to play. Plus you'll have a complete Bundy Sax, not a Frankensax.

The transposition is tough as well. The Alto Sax is in G. When it is three hours into a gig, some one requests a tune on the big flute on the stand, and you have had three or four Guinnesses, then tell me how well you can transpose a lead sheet into the key you need to be successful on Alto Sax. That is the real test of your transposition skills.

Last year I purchased a Selmer Mark VI low Bb baritone from 1957, and I am currently enjoying practising and playing on the horn. I own two Mark VI altos, one from 1961, the other from 1971. The 62 can be pretty bright depending on your disposition and the era of the sax. The 82Z is a darker sound than the 62 and blows a lot freer than the SX90. All 3 are good, usable saxes and solid for learning on. Aaron, If that is the MP that came with the horn, they are usually pretty small openings and poor quality. Any decent MP will improve things.

While these "saxophones" are attractive and reasonably priced instruments, there's something ironic about building a simple, sax-inspired horn that can play only in a couple of keys. It's as if the missing 17th century saxophones are now being provided.The mute has lot of space inside, so your hands have room and it's easy to play all notes even palm and side keys. Space allow for more easy playing of bell low notes too. The mute looks nice with a cool shape, it's classy. There are mount and hole for mic/wire, and a hole to hold a lyre for reading music.
